ATO warns to watch out for scammers
The ATO has reported that scammers are using pre-recorded robocalls impersonating them and threatening immediate arrest for an unpaid tax debt.
Known as 'spoofing', the technology the scammers use shows a genuine ATO number on the caller ID and they also have the capability to replicate websites and email addresses.
The advice if you receive such a call is to hang up.
If you have shared personal information or made a payment to who you believe is a scammer, you need to call the dedicated scam line on 1800 008 540.
The ATO advise that the best way to protect yourself, is to not share with anyone the following personal details unless you know and trust them:
- your tax file number
- date of birth
- credit card
- bank details
They also advise to:
- turn on multifactor authentication like SMS security codes, when available
- ensure you are aware of the status of your tax and super affairs.
