Asic business name renewal spam alert

Misleading renewal letters are currently circulating A few of our clients have recently received letters requesting payment for company or business name renewals.

These notices can appear official at first glance. However, in the cases reported to us, the letters were not issued by ASIC and were found to be from third party providers seeking payment for renewal services. 

If you receive a similar correspondence, it is important to carefully review the details before making any payment. 

What to look out for: 

  • Requests for payment for a Company Review or Business Name Renewal
  • Inclusion of an ACN and reference number to appear legitimate. 
  • fee that is higher than ASIC’s official renewal fee. 
  • GST shown on the charge. This can be a red flag for misleading third-party notices. 
  • A contact number that connects to an automated service rather than directly to ASIC. 

In one recent example, a client contacted us before making payments. After reviewing the ACN and details provided, it was identified that the issuing company was not connected to ASIC. 

Important: 

Some third-party businesses offer renewal reminders or processing services. While they may include disclaimers stating they are not affiliated with ASIC, the presentation of these notices can be confusing. 

Before paying any renewal notice, consider verifying the details directly through the ASIC website or by contacting your TaxAssist adviser
